During the week of Dec. 30-Jan. 5, Hawaii Island police arrested 34 motorists for drunken driving. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Four were under the age of 21.
During the week of Dec. 30-Jan. 5, Hawaii Island police arrested 34 motorists for drunken driving. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Four were under the age of 21.
Since Jan. 1, there have been 29 DUI arrests.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 12; South Hilo, 9; Puna, 6; and North Kohala, 2.
So far this year, there have been 29 DUI arrests compared to 15 during the same period last year, an increase of 93.3 percent.
There have been 16 major accidents so far this year compared to 14 during the same period last year, an increase of 14.3 percent.
There have been two traffic fatalities so far this year on Hawaii Island, compared to one at this time last year.
Police believe one of the two fatalities are related to alcohol, and that speed played a factor in both fatal crashes.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
